Album Review: Confess – Revenge At All Costs (Rexius Records)

Iranian groove metal/hardcore band Confess describe themselves as a “five-piece street protest”. It’s not a figure of speech: Nikan Khosravi (vocals/guitar) and Arash Ilkhani (DJ / Sampler) have experienced political persecution first-hand. The band’s upcoming album “Revenge at All Costs” is a cry of outrage in the form of chunky down-tuned riffs marinated in the Norwegian winter. It will be released on the 21st January, 2022 via Rexius Records.

Speaking about the new album, Nikan had this to say:

We’re so excited to drop the album! ‘Revenge At All Costs’ is exactly what it says in the title! It took me almost seven years and countless versions of it to finish it, and I couldn’t be happier with the result! We worked with our friend Erling Malm as the producer/mixing engineer and the legendary Machine, who mastered the album and put his magical touch on it at the end! His work with bands like Lamb of God and Suicide Silence had a huge impact on us growing up.

Next time you open your mouth to screech about how your ‘civil liberties’ are being denied and how your ‘freedom’ is being taken away because someone asked you to put a mask on, think about a band like Confess. A group who have been imprisoned in their home country of Iran for making music. Now, residing in Norway, they are free to expel all their frustration and anger and we should all be so grateful.

Revenge at All Costs is a blistering showcase of groove metal and hardcore. An album that feels and sounds so damn honest. An album that makes you feel bad for ever complaining about anything trivial, but also an album that makes you feel good because it is a blast of scorching fierceness. An album that will have you stomping and grooving with its aggressive energy. 11 tracks of ‘fuck you’ to political systems designed to put a stop to this kind of music.

This is music that fires you up. Makes you want to take the street and demand better and fairer lives for the most marginalised. It’s the groove-orientated soundtrack to a mass-million march with the hardcore undertakings of the first brick being thrown through a corporate window.

It’s impossible to ignore the political tone of this record, after all it surrounds Confess, but it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the heavy and hard-hitting noise in isolation. Although why you’d want too is anyone’s guess. Confess’ experiences and opinions enhance the thrust and thump of this record.

A brilliant middle finger in the air. Support Confess at all costs.
