Album Review: Necrophagous – In Chaos Ascend (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Necrophagous sees members of Visceral Bleeding and Entrails converge to forge a style of death metal that’s both old school in sound and contemporary in the way they inject the irresistible grooves. In effect, it doesn’t sound too different from a cross of the aforementioned bands, with a healthy dose of the genre’s progenitors such as Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus and like.

Necrophagous’ In Chaos Ascends will be released on the 7th of January 2022 via Transcending Obscurity Records.

Starting 2022 as they ended 2021, Transcending Obscurity Records bring us another quality slab of death metal. One from a group more than capable of meshing the old school and the groovier new school. Although the guttural horror that gurgles up from the intro of The Binding and the ferocious burst that erupts like a sore on Order of the Lion might suggest this album is purely old-school death metal chaos.

Give it time, it doesn’t take long for Necrophagous to reveal that there is much more to them. While also being disgustingly intense and horrifically heavy. At Dawn Thee Immolate, Traitors and the Pendulum and In Chaos, Ascend have Necrophagous pulling zero punches and leaving everyone and everything lying in a pool of blood, vomit and tears.

Their pulverising assault continues with no let up from a scathing assault of riffs, drums and vocals. Wolf Mother, Blood on the Stone of Thee Monuments, The Vile Embalmed, The Plague and the Arts and so on… the lack of variety could hurt a lesser death metal band but not Necrophagous. No, they control the heavy chaos with an ease that screams decades in the scene.

It’s an exhausting bout of head-banging, so much so, that there is a palatable sense of relief when the end comes. Although it comes with just as much chaos as ever, Horns of Seven and Wrecker of Pain ensuring this album is the early bar setter for death metal in 2022.
