Christmas EP Review: Cadaveric Incubator/Undergang – Christmas Split (Extremely Rotten Productions)

It’s Christmas and you know what that means. The jolly fat man is on route but he’s not dropping off happy gifts this year. He’s dropping off something far more horrifying. Christmas Split is a 2-track EP from Finnish deathgrind band, Cadaveric Incubator and Danish death metal band, Undergang. It was released on December 1st, 2021.

An EP for the anti-Christmas brigade, there’s nothing joyful about these two tracks. The first being Cadaveric Incubator’s filth covered offering, Swarming Vulgar Christmas. A maggot-covered slab of meaty deathgrind that features lyrics like:

Christmas time is here again
Santa needs his final vengeance
He won’t stop until you’re all…
Fucking dead

Jolly shit. It’s a cool track that goes on for far too long. It starts to feel like you’re listening to an extended outro. One that goes on for over a minute. The monotonous second half starts to overshadow the strong first half.

Undergang don’t have this problem with Hjerternes Tid as they reach into their bag of death metal. Playing around with some familiar melodies and tunes for something that can best be described as vomitus. Though, what you’re chucking up is more likely to be eggnog and holly.

Of course, neither track feels Christmassy. That’s kind of the point but with a bit of digging and proper listening you’ll find that these tracks are far more Christmas orientated then many others.
