EP Review: The Last Martyr – Purgatory (Self Released)
Enlisting the help of the unstoppable Chris Lalic (Windwaker, To Octavia, Days Like These) on production, mix and mastering, The Last Martyr are primed and ready to unleash their thrashing new EP, ‘Purgatory’, out Friday December 10th, 2021.
Featuring their previously released singles; Hindsight and Afterglow. As well as their latest single, Freaking Out. Purgatory is a collection that tells you everything you need you know about this nu-metal and rock hybrid.
Kicking off with Freaking Out, an explosive blast of dirty groove, chuggy rhythms and powerful vocals. It’s the first of many anthems as Hindsight comes along with some real pep and bounce. Nice and heavy, some seriously serrated sounds coming through and with a chorus that really does get you moving.
Out of Time is another hit that has strong melody, backed up by a great vocal performance. The danceable and nu-metal verses play off the punchy, rockier chorus well, resulting in… you guessed… another anthemic listen.
It’s very easy to hear just why The Last Martyr have wide-spread appeal and Like a Ghost is the perfect example of it. Moody and dirty, heavy and groovy but also incredibly catchy. A wide array of music fans will find something to like in a track like this.
Their triumphant EP then closes out with one last blast of energetic metal. Where the riffs get really harsh, the melodies sound light and once again, the vocals absolutely slay. The burst of heaviness in this track is particularly cool.
