Video Premiere: A Permanent Shadow – Beautiful People

A Permanent Shadow is a band for want of a better description. Its only fixture is CP Fletcher who has worked with a rotating cast of musicians and producers.

A blend of old and new, the songs draw from the likes of (in no particular order) Iggy Pop, Scott Walker, Gary Numan, Yellow Magic Orchestra, David Sylvian and Nine Inch Nails as well as more recent bands like Editors, Interpol and Franz Ferdinand among many others, encompassing post-punk, funk-punk and synth-pop. Today, the new single “Beautiful People” is released with an accompanying video. The track will be featured on the upcoming album “Humdrum”. The song talks about what happens when the beauty is gone once the aging process sets in, especially for people who have used their looks all their life to get what they want.

The track was composed by British producer Paul Malcolm and produced by Valentí Nieto and Albert Català.

CP elaborates:

Beautiful People is a song written by a friend of mine who asked me to collaborate on some of his music. We recorded three tunes together, out of which I liked Beauitful People so much I asked my friend Malcom’s permission to use it for one of my own records. We beefed it up a little bit with extra guitars and call-and-response choruses, and it’s come to be one of my favourites on our second album which will be out in early 2022. Lyrically it deals with aging and losing your power to charm. Paul is a really witty guy and I think the lyrics perfectly reflect that.
