EP Review: Blood Sport – Hot Blood and Cold Steel (Gates of Hell Records)
Unrelenting, brash speed metal from the dark, icy climes of Finland! The remastered vinyl release of six-song EP from one of Scandinavia’s brashest new bands, Hot Blood and Cold Steel immediately establishes Blood Sport as a speed metal force to be reckoned with! Out on November 12th via Gates of Hell Records.
No-nonsense, rough and impetuous; Blood Sport’s Hot Blood and Cold Steel isn’t messing around. Six tracks of nasty and noisy speed metal, the urgency in the instrumentation is what immediately stands out. It’s hyper from the first note until the last and fits the ‘garage’ style punky spirit Blood Sport have.
It’s messy but not to the point of annoyance. The instruments are clashing and clanging but it’s enjoyable because they clearly know exactly what they’re doing. It’s an EP that wants to you visualise Blood Sport up close and in your face. Tasting their blood, sweat and tears.
It works and the EP length ensures boredom never sets in. Especially as there is little variety in the pacing even if the array of riffs, soloing, hooks and more is quite impressive. They’ve made a hefty statement here and adding a vital injection of modern energy into the speed metal sub-genre.
