Album Review: Canyyn – Canyyn (Self Released)

Canyyn are a power trio dealing in heavy stoner rock jams and tight groove metal. They will be releasing their self-titled debut full-length album on October 29th, 2021.

A unique sound that combines the jam style of 70’s acid rock with modern stoner groove and elements of doom. Canyyn’s debut is an album you can head-bang and move too. Five chunky and groovy as hell stoner jam rock fusions to have some fun with.

It’s not all big talk either, the boasts about mixing these sounds. As this self-titled release shows them having a command of it that is so damn impressive. Moving from electric rhythms to thrilling guitar solos to doomy, heavy bursts and backed up by nostalgic vocals. It’s really hard to not fall in love with Canyyn based off just the opening track Bring Me Down.

You’ll hear a wealth of influences as the album goes on and Canyyn have a few more tricks up their sleeve too. Such as the psychedelic touches of Wages or the thumping chorus and bassy thrums that features in Crush Your Bones. Two very different sounding tracks but both equally enjoyable.

Though if you want wicked energy and groove then In Deep Water will deliver as it’s as straight-forward as Canyyn possibly get on this album. Enjoy the short and focused sound of that because the last track, Through the Leaves is completely different.

Not in the sense of a massive musical shift in sound, it is still Canyyn, but it’s Canyyn stretching their musical muscles and testing their strength with a 9+ minute eclectic effort. All the stoner groove, all the melodic jamming, the soloing and psych-tinged noise that you could dream of. A wicked closer to a wicked debut release.
