Dissecting DOOM with the Necrosexual.

Growing up in the nineties was a grand time for the blossoming genre of blood splattered video games. Many were way more violent than intended for my impressionable young mind.

I blasted Nazis to smithereens in Wolfenstein 3D. Quake paired atmospheric Lovecraftian horrors with a killer soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails. But, one game rules them all: DOOM.

I think it’s strangely comforting how Doom remains the same fundamental gaming experience through the ages. Its looks and mechanics evolve with the times, but no matter what Doom you play, you can bet your ass it involves you pumping your shotgun into every demon hell can offer.

I bought a Playstation 4 during the great Quarantine of 2020 specifically for Doom Eternal, the latest chapter of the franchise, and it has delivered the goods! This one sinks its claws into you like the flaming hook of a super shotgun.

Doom Eternal punishes you with its difficulty. As you rip and tear to hell and back, you must endure wave after wave of foes. Fast ones, flying ones, giant ones, respawning ones. They all suck after a while. It rapidly devolves into an orgy of hyperspeed violence. I often feel like I’m stuck in a hellish version of Groundhog’s day, because I too often get stuck for hours or days at a time on a single killing floor. And yet, I keep crawling back for more action!

As of this writing, I’m replaying this game on its hardest setting of all, nightmare mode. I must be more of a masochist than I realize.

One boss fight, the Marauder, is simply insane. You have a split second to shoot this fuck when his eyes flash green to deal damage. Sounds simple, but you’re also fired from all sides by constantly respawning zombies with freakin’ flamethrowers and laser guns for arms. The Marauder hits you with heavy damage whether you are close or distant, so it’s a desperate dance of evasion and quick reflexes to best this foe. Oh, he also summons wolves to chase you down. I’m stressed just typing this.

I finally beat the marauder on nightmare mode a few weeks ago, and it might have been the proudest moment of my adult life. Put that shit on a resume for multitasking with a cool head under pressure in the most insanely fast paced environments.

One sidenote: 2004’s Doom3 is worth a try as well. Whereas Doom Eternal is an in your face, smash mouth experience, Doom3 is more of a survival horror in space game. Lots of sneaking around dark hallways with an endless supply of ghouls to sneak up on you, or conveniently materialize out of hidden doors in your blindspot. It’s genuinely scary, and reminds me of a mix between Event Horizon with the gameplay and storyline of the game Half Life.

To play off the line from Dark Angel, Doom is certain! Life is not.
