EP Review: Cherie Amour – Internal Discussions (Rude Records)

Cherie Amour, Maryland’s nu-punk pioneers, are utilising an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. Previously known as One Life to Lead, Trey Miller (vocals), Casey Reid (guitar), Brendan Willis (guitar) and Ronnie Sherman (drums), felt that their group’s evolving style and sound deserved a name that matched their overall style. This evolved sound, one that steps away from classic pop punk and the idea of being a “Warped Tour Band”, helps clarify the band’s intended direction of carving their own path in the scene.

The world will get to know this new direction soon as Cherie Amour will release their brand-new EP, Internal Discussions on October 1st, 2021 via Rude Records.

Credit where credit is due, Cherie Armour have something quite unique and unusual in their hands here. An introduction and insight into where this band is heading, kicking off with the baffling combo of pop-punk lightness, nu-metal sensations and effects heavy oddness. That’s Burn and Imposter and they are pair that might leave you scratching your head.

They’re eclectic and interesting, electrifying and clever but sure to be polarising. Do you like the pop-punkiness? Cool, but here’s a burst of rap to upend everything. Perhaps you’re in love with the upbeat and light energy? Here’s a sudden spurt of heavy noise to startle you. Perhaps you like the foot-tapping cleanliness of the beat? Here’s some ear-splitting effects to rip through the brain matter. It sounds messy but it all makes sense once you hear it and the deeper down the rabbit hole you go, the more it starts to grip. By the middle of the EP, where A Beautiful Disaster sits, you’ll know for sure if this one is for you or not.

If you do carry on, you’ll be greeted by grin-inducing fun groove, airy melodies blended with rap and intense expulsions of passion on the brilliant 2NICE2SAY. Before Orlando wraps up this oddity with one more catchy and chorus driven number that continues to cofound with weird moments and sudden tone shifts.

This is one that you’re going to have to make up your own mind about.
