Album Review: Fluisteraars – Gegrepen door de Geest der Zielsontluiking (Eisenwald)
After last year’s widely acclaimed third full-length album “Bloem” found its way into the hearts and minds of many listeners, it did not take long for the duo of M. Koops and B. Mollema to return to the studio and record an immediate follow up. But do not be fooled by this quick succession of releases; “Gegrepen door de Geest der Zielsontluiking” is in many ways a polar opposite of what “Bloem” had to offer.
It will be released on August 27th, 2021 via Eisenwald.
On a creative high, Fluisteraars have crafted something quite magical here. Mostly because it came from such a unique environment. The duo utilised a minimalist recording style. Only doing one take of every instrument, only recording the natural acoustics of the room and recording one song each studio day.
The result is a three-track epic that has a raw spontaneity to it. What you’re hearing is the band at their most animalistic and exposed but also their most artistic. Opening track Het Overvleugelen der Meute is a violent eruption of blackness with expertly intertwined melodies throughout.
A dreamlike intensity creates something truly magnificent in the form of Brand Woedt in mijn Graf but perhaps Verscheuring in de Schemering is the track to sum up what this album is.
Fluisteraars’ longest song to date at over twenty minutes. It has black metal urgency but is littered with strange psychedelia that drips through the mind. A momentous effort that pushes and pulls the mind back and forth to the point of utter confusion. Yet, the bedlam created by Fluisteraars is so carefully and meticulously constructed it beggars belief.
