Album Review: Slaughter To Prevail – Kostolom (Sumerian Records)
Russian Deathcore demolishers Slaughter to Prevail return with new album, Kostolom. The new album will be released via Sumerian Records on August 13th, 2021.
The brainchild of Russian vocalist Alex Terrible, who has amassed over 750,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel through extreme vocal covers, Slaughter To Prevail released their debut EP, ‘Chapters Of Misery’ in 2016 and followed with their debut full-length album, ‘Misery Sermon’ in 2017.
While Alex Terrible’s incredible vocals are a major selling point of this record, it’s not the only predominantly positive thing about this new album. The deathcore unit have reached a level of refinement that really grabs the attention. Notable from the start with the crushing and techy sounding Bonebreaker and no-nonsense deathcore blast that is Demolisher.
Meaty, fast and aggressive music. This is the soundtrack for a pissed off mood and the intense popularity of Baba Yaga keeps the ‘in your face’ feel at the forefront. Even if the clean vocals don’t quite hit the mark personally. Regardless, it is still a track that spits fire.
Made in Russia nu-metal energy, crunchy percussion and techy guitar wildness keeps things hot. Zavali Ebalo rages and rages with unmitigated rhythmic fury and Agony is not just heavier than anything heard so far, it also has a screeching guitar solo and the ballsiest of breakdowns!
Your Only doubles down on that nu-metal blend with crushing metalcore vibes to middling results before I Killed A Man delivers an interesting combination of melody and brutality. A track that grows on you the more you listen to it.
Bratva’s moody electronica gives way to another beastly and stompy pit-starter, Ouroboros mixes sharp twists and chunky turns to turn the brain matter into mush before Head On A Plate and Father wrap up the album in ferocious style.
One of 2021’s most intensive records. If you’re look for something to lose your shit too, while having enough heavy nuances to keep you coming back, then Kostolom is the album to check out.
