EP Review: Pistols At Dawn – Nocturnal Youth (Self Released)
Pistols At Dawn is an American rock band formed in 2015 by drummer Adam Jaffe, guitarist Devin White, guitarist Mike Buffa, and bassist Billy Sullivan. Virtuoso guitarist Buffa died tragically in 2018, and the band reunited with incendiary guitarist Tommy Richardson in 2019 with its first worldwide releases in early 2020 with the line-up completed by front man and former VH1 Rockstar Supernova finalist Chris Pierson.
Pistols at Dawn released three new singles and videos in 2020, “Cold” “Gauntlet” and “All You Offer”. They then entered the studio again in mid-2020 and wrapped up their new EP “Nocturnal Youth” with Producer Jeff Tomei and “Faith No More” Mastering Guru Maor Appelbaum. Nocturnal Youth was released on May 7th, 2021 in the US and Europe will finally get it on July 15th 2021.
Sometimes it is so easy to hear something and know that the band in question is going to make it big. You listen to them and instantly recognise the appeal as well as seeing how much crossover possibilities there are.
This is Pistols at Dawn – the world’s biggest rock band in a decade or so. You heard it here.
It’s a bold statement but one that feels justified upon hearing Nocturnal Youth. Even though, personally, it doesn’t blow me away. I like it, I just don’t love but it’s clear as hell to me that so many others will.
Why? Pistols At Dawn’s brand of hard rock has an electrifying quality to it that is both antique and contemporary in equal measures. High energy, pulsating radio rock music that appeals to all… literally everyone under the bloody sun. It’s music that makes you want to move, to dance and head-bang too, caught up in the throes of passion. It’s music that makes you feel good and seems custom made to be played in a stadium or equally as grand venue.
So… why don’t I love it? It’s simply personal taste. It’s a little to ‘perfect’ for me. It’s been created and produced to be on the radio and that smoothness sticks a little in the throat. Here’s the thing though. I think it’s class, I think Pistols at Dawn are class and I can’t wait to see them rise through the rock ranks to take their place at the top.
