Band Interview: Catching Mangoes
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with alternative rock band, Catching Mangoes.
1. How did you get started as a band?
The journey began at primary school where two of us met as young sproglets. We then met the third mango at the next education stage, began gigging and haven’t stopped since. Of course the initial songs were absolutely shocking so I’d like to think we’ve improved since then. We have recently acquired 2 extra members (guitar and keys) to help us with our new album live.
2. How would you describe your sound?
This is always a hard one to answer, especially with our new album sound. The majority of it is 70s inspired rock n roll with some psychedelic, blues and heavy rock thrown in the mixing bowl. However there is also a folk/campfire ditty and a heavy metal song on the album so I suppose it’s quite a broad mix of genres all in all.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
As a band, we’ve been heavily influence by the likes of The Doors/Beatles and also more modern bands such as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. We all actually have fairly different musical tastes, obviously with large overlaps and I think this comes through in the music. I have been listening to a lot of Jeff Buckley recently – his voice is outrageous.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
To be honest, we’ve only released music since it’s all been around so it’s hard to tell how it would have been received without. Streaming is super convenient for everyone but it sucks that no one at our level of the industry can really make any money out of it. It obviously feels great when the numbers start bumping up but you can’t beat person on person feedback from someone.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
We’re all just finishing various university course at the moment so that has taken up a lot of our time. We are also partial to a lovely lager when the time is right and I’m extremely fond of a bbq in the sun.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We have recently recorded a concept album in Brighton about a young lad called Kevin who is trying to escape his small town and solve the mystery surrounding his long-lost father. Along with this we’ve got a mini-documentary, 2 parts of which are out now on our YouTube and a short story about Kevin and his compadres. We have released 2/4 singles from the album, all on our Spotify etc, and are releasing the title track ‘Kevin’s Town’ tomorrow!!! Depending on when this is published!! 21st May!! Go listen!! We’re also playing at the Hop Yard in Forest Row on 26th June, Hoxton Underbelly on 17th July and Hope and Ruin, Brighton on 16th August, before we take on the UK’s North later this year. Keep an eye on our socials for dates on this and come party with us!!
