EP Review: Drown This City – Colours We Won’t Know (UNFD)
Melbourne metalcore risers Drown This City’s new EP ‘Colours We Won’t Know will be released on the 28th May, 2021 via UNFD.
Drown This City’s Alex Reade describes the band’s 2021 EP as the ultimate purge of darkness. While their 2019 release Alpha // Survivor had been the proving ground for her strength and overcoming, Colours We Won’t Know finds the vocalist winding back the clock and standing face to face with the past torment she thought had been put to rest.
She says:
I think being in lockdown in Melbourne left us no choice but to face whatever we were running from, and that time drew every bit of honesty with myself out of me. It was very confronting to feel such sadness in me again, but I worked through all of the disgust and shame I’d been suppressing, and we’ve written our saddest and bleakest songs to date because of it.
Musically, DTC find themselves at their absolute heaviest and collaborating on themes and ideas as a band and team more than ever. With a freshly formed core writing group at play — comprising Reade (lyrics), guitarist Josh Renjen leading instrumentation and new bassist/vocalist and co-lyricist Toby Thomas — together the band push every boundary possible.
A tough but captivating listen, you don’t just need to read what this release means to Drown This City to understand the heartfelt and painful messages behind it. They bleed through the music, through the passionate display and challenging lyrical content. The latter expressed by two different sets of vocals. Alex’s emotional clean power and Toby’s furious guttural eruptions. The two working in wonderful tandem, trading barbs and emotional depth.
Vocals aside, Drown This City deal in modern metalcore and absolutely swing for it here. Six tracks of moving music with riotous heaviness. Colours We We Won’t Know is a heavyweight release. A spectacular showcase of a band laying themselves bare and connecting to their listeners in the most honest of ways.
While also, importantly, pushing jagged riffing, beastly breakdowns and bone-crunching metal groove to the front. You’ll feel this EP but you’ll also be able to go absolutely wild in a pit too. Watch out world, Drown This City are about to come raging across the continents.
