Album Review: Drift Into Black – Patterns of Light (Self Released)
One-man bands allow for so much freedom, and for those who are blessed with creativity it can lead to prolific output in a shorter space of time than groups. One such solo project is Drift into Black, led by ex-Grey Skies Fallen keyboardist Craig Rossi. With his fourth release Patterns of Light, the New Yorker continues a trend of four releases in four years in synth-driven gloom, inspired by the European vein of melodic doom-death metal. It will be released on May 28th 2021.
There is an etheral feel to Drift Into Black that fits the band name and the title of this brand new album. It’s like drifting in darkness with sudden bursts of light startling the mind until you begin to see the patterns. What seemed like erratic nonsense suddenly makes perfect sense.
Even when delivering the weight of heavy doom, that other-worldly feel is still very strong throughout and Drift Into Black knows how to deliver heavy doom. Albeit with a classic flavour and with flowing melodies. This is an all encompassing listen, one that requires time and patience to fully appreciate. It is well worth giving it what it needs though as Drift Into Black crafts a compelling world of beauty, tension and sadness. While being undeniably heavy as anything, when required.
Skilfully moving from meaningful melody and clean, echoing vocals to crunchy and guttural growls with robust heavy rhythm. It seems almost easy for Drift Into Black and sounds as natural as sleeping. It’s music that means something and doom that captures the imagination wholeheartedly. Dare it even be said… but Patterns of Light is what you could call ‘epic doom’. All the work of one man? That’s even more impressive.
Surely that is going to be enough to make you want to check this out? You should, it’s something you won’t regret.
