EP Review: Canyon – Static (Self Released)
Melbourne’s Canyon are a power-trio who have been crafting their own brand of alternative metal meets stoner rock and prog. Their new EP, Static will be released on May 21st 2021.
With high spirits in tow and a ton of heavy rock noise in their arsenal, Canyon impress on this release. Kicking off with the noisy energy of Insane, the chorus driven by heavy-ass riffs and vocals that sit on the Cornell side of power. It’s a hell of a good start.
Keep Me Waiting is less ‘radio friendly’ as it has the band really stretch their imaginations for a wild jam session. The riffs, thick and buzzing like fat flies, it’s a track with melody too and that makes it all the more exciting. Talking of which, Gone Before Your Time has a pretty mellowness to it while still showcasing the power behind Canyon as they take us through lows and highs equally.
Minority Outspoken brings the groove and energy back up for a body shaking listen that gets quite intense in the latter portion. Another brilliant slice of heavy rock. Before this excellent EP wraps up with the title track and that chorus-driven mellow/heavy rock combo that Canyon do so well.
