Horror Short Review: Brush (2020)
An unnerving horror short, Brush was written and directed by Jay Diaz. It stars Lauren Marini as a woman who finds she has received a package when she arrives home. A package that she never ordered.
She puts it aside, has dinner then video calls her friend. After family needs interrupt the call, the woman decides to open the package. What’s inside? A brush, one that looks like it belongs on a dressing table of some stately home that has a secret side of Satanism going on.
Naturally, she is confused about it but quickly dismisses it and has a shower. It’s while she is showering that we get our first clue that this brush is sinister as it briefly shakes while sitting on her counter.
Once showered, the woman decides to use the brush on her hair and sits down to watch a horror movie afterwards. While being scared by A Nightmare on Elm Street, we see the figure of a woman with long black hair and a white dress standing behind her. It seems as though this brush might already have an owner…
If you want to find out what happens next, you’ll have to watch the full thing yourself below. Take our word for it, you won’t regret it as Brush is a creepy and cool horror short. One with a payoff that is just horrible.
There are three major things to take out of this horror short. Firstly, is the calibre of the acting from Lauren Marini. Who, without any detail about her character, draws you into her plight with the brush. Secondly, the music… what is used here is genuinely creepy stuff and really enhances the third thing. Which is the shots of the mysterious figure, always in the background and always with its back to us and the woman.
Put all of that together and the end result is Brush… an uncomfortable and effective scary short.
