Album Review: Ensemble 1 – Guitar, Bass & Drums (Self Released)

Ensemble 1 combine minimalist composition methods with speed, volume and intricate percussion techniques to create gargantuan soundscapes. Eschewing traditional narratives in favour of geometrical principles, rhythmic complexity and auditory hallucinations, a commitment to an otherworldly sonic experience is at the centre of the group.

Formed in 2017 in Brighton, UK, the live line-up consists of a guitar and drum duo incorporating technology to conjure the impression of a large ensemble of musicians playing in machine-like unison. Their debut album; Guitars, Bass & Drums will be released on May 14th 2021.

This is so freaking weird. This is also so freaking interesting.

A mighty progressive instrumental effort that asks you to embrace the notion that nothing is ever what you might expect it to be. That’s the mantra of Ensemble 1’s Guitars, Bass & Drums. Expect the unexpected and still expect to be surprised regardless. It’s diverse music that shifts and shimmers like a mirage in the baking hot desert.

Three tracks? More than enough especially as there’s nothing short about this album. Nor does it short-change in regards to what it delivers. Ensemble 1 are all about taking you on a wild journey of noise wreathed in darkness. Where chill melodies, repetitive beats, crunchy blasts and more are just some of the sounds that emanate from the gloom.

It wraps around you, blocking out all other sights and sounds. The ease in which Ensemble 1 takes hold of your mind and holds it for 47 minutes is astounding. Nowhere is that better summarised then by the gargantuan final track, GBD I Delay Loops.

Part maddening, part addictive listening and part progressive weirdness. Taken to a level that almost seems designed to polarise. Which it will, the whole album will. If you’re not a fan of long, meandering progressive instrumentals than you’re not going to like this. However, if you’re after a musical challenge, one that is exhausting yet satisfying, Guitars, Bass & Drums will more than suffice.
