10 Best Horror Movies Released In 2021!
It’s not all been doom and gloom this year! That is what we said in last year’s best horror movie’s list. Check it out here. This year has been gloomy and we will be honest, it’s not been a great year for horror. However, we’ve found some that we think are great and have put together a list of our 10 best horror movies released this year. These movies impressed us and had us talking about them. Enjoy!
10. The Taunting
IMDB Synopsis: Four friends spend the weekend in a haunted bed and breakfast but are too self absorbed to notice.
A silly but wholly amusing movie, The Taunting is not quite a short but not quite a feature film seeing as it’s 44 minutes long. Which is more than long enough as anymore and the concept would have become tired.
Filmed in black and white, it’s clear that the classic horror The House on Haunted Hill played some part in inspiring this movie. However, with next to no budget, The Taunting goes for laughs and nails it most of the time.
More of a parody of horror rather than an actual horror, you won’t be frightened by The Taunting but you will be laughing. It’s a very funny movie held together by a cast totally in sync. Read our full review here.
9. Willy’s Wonderland
IMDB Synopsis: A quiet drifter is tricked into a janitorial job at the now condemned Willy’s Wonderland. The mundane tasks suddenly become an all-out fight for survival against wave after wave of demonic animatronics. Fists fly, kicks land, titans clash — and only one side will make it out alive.
Willy’s Wonderland is a lot of fun. It really succeeds because of the simplicity of the idea. It knows what it wants to be and it achieves that with only minor flaws. Overall, Willy’s Wonderland delivers something a bit different. If you know what you’re getting before going in then there’s nothing to be disappointed about. For what it is, it is really enjoyable. 8. Till Death
IMDB Synopsis: A woman is left handcuffed to her dead husband as part of a sick revenge plot. Unable to unshackle, she has to survive as two killers arrive to finish her off.
Directed by S.K. Dale in his directorial debut, from a screenplay by Jason Carvey. Till Death is a horror/thriller that stars Megan Fox, Callan Mulvey, Eoin Macken, Aml Ameen and Jack Roth.
Till Death is a good movie. One that isn’t doing anything particularly original but has such a tight script, it feels quite original. The solid cast, good effects (some practical blood and gore here too) and setting just adds so much gravitas to the situation. Read our full review here.
7. A Classic Horror Story
IMDB Synopsis: In this gruesome suspense film, strangers traveling in southern Italy become stranded in the woods, where they must fight desperately to get out alive.
A Classic Horror Story is like if Midsommar, Cabin in the Woods & The Village had a baby. The initial setup isn’t at all original but it works well for a horror film. This movie purposely lulls you into believing that it’s going to be just another generic horror movie. One that’s similar to others that we’ve all seen before way too many times. However, there’s a huge twist. Read our full review here.
6. Nightbooks
IMDB Synopsis: A young boy named Alex becomes the prisoner of a witch to avoid certain death, he convinces her to let him tell her a scary story every night. Upon meeting the witch’s servant, Yazmin, the two must use their wits to escape her apartment, a magical labyrinth filled with various dangers, before the witch kills them both.
What to say about Nightbooks… For a 12 it was pretty scary and pushed boundaries. For a “family” film it was definitely near the edge and you can tell Sam Rami is the producer. There is a constant sense of unease and dread throughout. Strong aesthetic and impressive costumes, great effects (bar the dodgy CGI) and the “real” witch looked freaky as hell. There was some great practical effects on show with her.
Nightbooks is 100% worth a watch. It’s original, entertaining and aesthetically pleasing. Read our full review here.
5. Demigod
IMDB Synopsis: Upon the death of her grandfather, a woman and her husband return to her birthplace in Germany’s Black Forest, only to find a terrifying secret awaits them.
Directed by Miles Doleac (The Dinner Party, Demons, The Hollow), who co-wrote it with Michael Donovan Horn. Demigod is a tense, eerie and supernatural twist on the Cernunnos myth.
Cernunnos (known as Dīs by Romans) was the name given to the ‘Horned God’ of Celtic mythology. He is interpreted as a god of fertility and hunting. In modern times, worship of Cernunnos in the Wicca religion has become popular.
It’s that aspect upon which Demigod bases its horror story upon. Read our full review here.
4. Candyman
IMDB Synopsis: A sequel to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began.
Updating and moving the Candyman mythos forward was a smart idea. The story of this movie is both interesting, well-told and features some exceptionally clever twists and turns.
While the writing might not always create the subtle and slow-burn atmosphere you want, the direction does. The film does a fantastic job of building horror and paying it off in cold and unfeeling ways. Those hoping for a visual bloodbath will be disappointed but that doesn’t mean we don’t have blood.
What’s blood for, if not for shedding?
Candyman 2021 is a good movie. It could never hope of reaching the levels of the original but it also could have been so much worse. The legend lives on – tell everyone. Read our full review here.
3. Blood Red Sky
IMDB Synopsis: A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight.
Blood Red Sky is a bloody good horror film. The concept alone deserves praise simply because it’s a truly original idea and for the most part it’s executed brilliantly. Firstly, the performances are in a word, phenomenal. The actors truly embody the ravenous creatures that they become with terrifying effect. The effects themselves are terrific, it’s as good as we’ve ever seen. These are the types of vampires that you really don’t see that often. Think 30 days of Night rather than Twilight. They are hideous monsters that will tear out your throat without a single thought. You wouldn’t want to encounter these scary bastards, that’s for sure. Read our full review here.
2. Oxygen
IMDB Synopsis: A woman wakes in a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she got there. As she’s running out of oxygen, she must rebuild her memory to find a way out of her nightmare.
Oxygen is a claustrophics and conspiracy theorists nightmare all wrapped up in one. A fascinating concept and although the twist is not earth shattering – because it could really only be a handful of things – it was cool nonetheless. Laurent’s performance is fantastic and believable, as are the effects.
A fantastic, confined, sci fi horror movie. Read our full review here.
1. Malignant
IMDB Synopsis: Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
Malignant is clearly a very divisive horror film. We’ve seen more than a couple of opinions from people calling it terrible. Then again, there are some who love it. We definitely agree more with the latter. This felt like something of a throwback to yesteryear.
This film is meant to be over the top, over dramatic, weird and cheesy as hell. Don’t overthink it, just enjoy the madness. Read our full review here.
